This month, 2014 Stella Prize winner Clare Wright is heading to China as part of a new collaboration between the Stella Prize and the Australian Writers’ Week in China program.
Run by the Australian Embassy in Beijing, the Australian Writers’ Week in China is a celebration of Australian stories and voices shared with Chinese audiences. This year the program focuses on award-winning and internationally recognised Australian authors. We are thrilled and excited that Clare will be taking Australian women’s writing to the world.
Over the course of eleven days, Clare will be visiting Guangzhou, Hefei, Shanghai and Beijing. She will give lectures and speak at special events including the Bookworm Literary Festival, Australian consulates and embassies, several local universities, the Australian Studies Centre, and at events celebrating International Women’s Day.
Clare’s visit marks the start of an exciting ongoing partnership between the Stella Prize and Australian Writers’ Week in China. Each year a Stella Prize winner or shortlisted author will visit China as a guest of the Australian embassy, and take part in a range of events celebrating Australian women’s writing.
About Clare Wright
Clare Wright is an historian who has worked as a political speechwriter, university lecturer, historical consultant, and radio and television broadcaster. She has become well known for searching out the other side of history: highlighting women’s stories in the narratives we think we already know.
Clare’s first book, Beyond the Ladies Lounge: Australia’s Female Publicans, garnered both critical and popular acclaim. Her groundbreaking second book, The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka, which took ten years to research and write, won the 2014 Stella Prize and has recently been published in a young adult edition, We Are the Rebels.
