The Stella Prize Reviewing Masterclass is an invaluable opportunity for emerging reviewers and books writers to hone their craft, under the guidance of two of Australia’s most respected literary critics.
Over the two sessions of the Reviewing Masterclass, participants will engage with approaches and theories underpinning literary criticism, and be given a thorough grounding in the practical skills necessary to write reviews for publication, including tone, content, angles, editing, and pitching processes.
The first class will be led by Jo Case on Friday 13 February. Jo is senior writer/editor at the Wheeler Centre and former books editor at the Big Issue. The second class will be led by Melinda Harvey on Friday 20 February. Melinda is a Melbourne-based book critic, and has lectured on English literature at several universities.
Participants will be provided with a copy of a book of their choice from the Stella Prize Longlist (announced Thursday 12 February). By the close of the Digital Writers’ Festival, participants will be expected to produce a substantial review of their chosen book, giving them the chance to apply the lessons of the Masterclass in practice. All participants will receive individual feedback on their review from Melinda or Jo.
